Sorbitol powder is crystalline sorbitol, C6H14O6 with CAS number 50-70-4, supplied as a white crystalline powder or granule in standard and directly compressible grades, produced by crystallising hydrogenated glucose syrup. The crystalline form exists for reasons of physical handling rather than chemistry. In the liquid grade, sorbitol's six hydroxyl groups are free to bind atmospheric water, making the syrup strongly hygroscopic; once crystallised, those hydroxyls are engaged in the crystal lattice and the powder is comparatively stable in air. That allows it to be blended, conveyed and compressed as a dry solid. Directly compressible grades are engineered with a particle morphology that binds under pressure without a wet granulation step, which removes a drying stage from a tablet line and is the reason sorbitol is a standard diluent in chewable and lozenge manufacture. It also has a pronounced negative heat of solution, giving a cooling sensation that masks bitterness, and it is non-cariogenic. Where it is bought purely as a polyol feedstock for resin or vitamin C manufacture, the liquid grade is normally more economic. It is used in tablet and lozenge manufacture, dry blends and premixes, cosmetics, as a polyol feedstock and as a humectant in dry systems.
