2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-Pentanediol Monoisobutyrate
2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate (CAS 25265-77-4) is the standard coalescent for latex paint. It has a free hydroxyl at one end and an ester at the other, which is what gives it its balance of water and polymer affinity.

2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-Pentanediol Diisobutyrate
2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate (CAS 6846-50-0) is the di-ester version, with both hydroxyls capped. Having no free hydroxyl it does not evaporate out, so it acts as a permanent plasticiser rather than a coalescent.
