2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate, CAS number 6846-50-0, is a clear, low-viscosity, low-odour liquid, widely known under the trade name TXIB. It shares a backbone with the monoisobutyrate but has both hydroxyl groups esterified. That structural difference changes its role entirely. The mono-ester retains a free hydroxyl, which gives it water compatibility and allows it to leave the film after coalescence has finished. The di-ester has no free hydroxyl at all: it is fully non-polar, has negligible water solubility and very low volatility, so it stays in the film permanently. It therefore functions as a plasticiser rather than a coalescent, softening the polymer for the life of the coating rather than transiently. Compared with phthalate plasticisers it is non-phthalate, low in viscosity, and has a low molecular weight that gives efficient plasticising at low addition, while its low volatility limits the fogging and migration that plague cheaper plasticisers in enclosed applications such as vehicle interiors. It is also used as a viscosity reducer in plastisols and as a coalescent where some permanent softening is wanted. It is used as a non-phthalate plasticiser in vinyl and plastisols, in caulks and sealants, adhesives, inks and low-VOC coatings.
