Michelia alba botanical extract is prepared from the flowers of Michelia alba, a magnolia relative cultivated across southern China, India and Southeast Asia and known as white champaca. The flowers are extracted and the material standardised into a carrier such as glycerine, glycol or a light ester for direct addition to a formulation. White champaca gives a lighter and fresher profile than the heavier white florals, green and tea-like with a clean floral lift rather than the indolic richness of jasmine, which is why perfumers treat the two as distinct materials rather than substitutes. As a botanical extract it is a dilute, formulation-ready preparation, not the concentrated absolute or the floral wax recovered during absolute production. It carries the plant's solvent-soluble constituents, including flavonoids and phenolic compounds associated with antioxidant activity, along with a share of the volatiles that give its scent. It is normally added to the water phase during cool-down at 0.1 to 5 percent, and compatibility with the preservative system should be confirmed, as botanical extracts carry their own microbiological load.
