Jasmine sambac botanical extract is prepared from the flowers of Jasminum sambac, grown chiefly in India, China and Southeast Asia and known as Arabian jasmine or mogra. The flowers are extracted and the resulting material is standardised and carried in a solvent such as glycerine, glycol or a light ester, so that it disperses into a formulation. It should not be confused with the two other jasmine materials in commerce. Jasmine absolute is the concentrated aromatic fraction used in perfumery; jasmine floral wax is the waxy residue left when that absolute is washed out. A botanical extract is neither: it is a dilute, formulation-ready preparation intended to carry the plant's water- and solvent-soluble constituents, including flavonoids and phenolic compounds, into a skin-care base at low addition. J. sambac is a different species from J. grandiflorum, the jasmine of Grasse, and has a distinctly greener, more tea-like and less indolic character, so the two are not interchangeable where scent is part of the effect. Typical use is 0.1 to 5 percent, added to the water phase during cool-down. It is used in facial and body skin care, masks and serums, hair care, natural fragrance work and in premium and botanical product ranges.
