Sumac wax, also called Japan wax, is a vegetable wax-like material obtained from the fruit of Rhus species. Chemically, it is rich in glycerides, including palmitic-acid-derived components, which distinguish its behaviour from hard leaf waxes dominated by long-chain wax esters. It is generally a pale yellow, comparatively soft solid. This lipid composition makes sumac wax useful when a formulation needs body with a softer, more yielding texture. It can contribute emolliency and consistency to oil phases, colour cosmetics and emulsion development. In emulsions it forms part of the lipid structure; the complete system still needs a suitable emulsifier.
