Candelilla wax is a plant-derived wax containing a substantial hydrocarbon fraction together with esters, free acids and other naturally occurring constituents. It is supplied as a firm wax, typically yellow through light brown depending on refining. Its mixed chemical composition gives formulators a different structuring profile from a predominantly hydrogenated triglyceride. Candelilla contributes body, gloss and a water-repellent film in oil-rich formulations. It can be combined with other waxes to adjust hardness while retaining a workable melt profile. In balms and sticks, its useful loading is determined by the required gel strength, payoff and compatibility with the liquid emollients.
