Sodium laureth sulfate, SLES, INCI name Sodium Laureth Sulfate and CAS number 9004-82-4, is the ethoxylated sulfate made from lauryl alcohol. This grade is supplied at 70 percent active matter as a white to pale yellow paste. Seventy percent is a deliberate choice, and it changes how the material is handled. SLES solutions pass through a gel phase between roughly 30 and 60 percent active, where viscosity rises so high the product cannot be pumped, so the commercial forms sit either side of it: a 28 percent mobile liquid, or this 70 percent paste. The paste carries about two and a half times the active per tonne of freight and per drum of storage, which is why anyone making shampoo or dishwash in volume buys it, but it has to be diluted through the gel range in the right direction, added to water under good agitation rather than the reverse, or it forms lumps that take hours to disperse. Warm storage keeps it pumpable. The specification a formulator checks is active matter, unsulfated matter, sodium sulfate and pH, and 1,4-dioxane, a by-product of the ethoxylation step, is controlled to the cosmetic limits of the market being supplied. It is used as the primary surfactant in shampoos, shower gels, bubble baths and liquid hand soaps, in dishwashing and laundry liquids, in car and hard-surface cleaners, and in industrial and institutional cleaning concentrates.
