Reishi mushroom extract is prepared from Ganoderma lucidum, the lingzhi of Chinese tradition, and carries CAS number 223751-82-4. It is offered in grades of 20, 30 and 50 percent polysaccharides, the beta-glucan-rich fraction that is the usual basis for standardising reishi extracts. Two groups of compounds give reishi its cosmetic interest. The polysaccharides, largely beta-glucans, are hydrophilic, film-forming and humectant, which suits them to moisturising and soothing claims, and they are what the percentage grades measure. The triterpenes, including the ganoderic acids, contribute antioxidant activity and the extract's characteristic bitterness but are present at much lower levels. Higher polysaccharide grades are lighter in colour and odour and allow lower dosing, while lower grades carry more of the whole-mushroom profile. Whether the extract comes from fruiting body or mycelium, and the extraction solvent used, should be confirmed from the certificate of analysis, since both affect composition and the INCI name. It is used in moisturising and soothing creams, sheet and wash-off masks, essences and toners, shower gels and hair care, and in antioxidant and anti-ageing personal care formulations.
