      How much candelilla wax replaces a given quantity of beeswax?

      Roughly half to two thirds, as a starting point. Candelilla is around twice as effective at raising hardness as beeswax at equal addition, so a direct one-for-one substitution produces a noticeably harder and more brittle product. The exact ratio depends on the rest of the formulation and should be established by trial rather than calculation.

      Why is candelilla wax brittle where beeswax is plastic?

      Composition. Beeswax is dominated by long-chain esters, which give it a plastic, workable character. Candelilla is roughly half hydrocarbon, chiefly hentriacontane, and hydrocarbon waxes crystallise into harder, more brittle structures. That brittleness is why candelilla is normally blended with a softer wax or a plasticising oil rather than used alone in a stick.

      Where does candelilla wax come from?

      It is scraped from the surface of the candelilla shrub, Euphorbia cerifera, which grows wild in the Chihuahuan desert of northern Mexico and southern Texas. The plant coats its stems in wax to limit water loss in arid conditions. Harvested stems are boiled in acidified water and the wax is skimmed from the surface.

      Is candelilla wax suitable for vegan products?

      Yes. It is entirely plant-derived and is the most widely used vegan alternative to beeswax in colour cosmetics and lip products, where its hardness and gloss are closest to what beeswax provides. Carnauba and rice bran wax are the other common vegan structuring waxes, each with a different hardness and melting point.
