About This Product
Glucose, dextrose, is a six-carbon monosaccharide with formula C6H12O6 and CAS number 50-99-7, produced by complete enzymatic hydrolysis of starch and supplied as crystalline monohydrate or anhydrous powder, or as syrup. Two industrial roles dominate. As a fermentation substrate it is the standard carbon source from which citric acid, lactic acid, amino acids, enzymes, antibiotics and ethanol are produced; almost any industrial fermentation begins with a glucose or glucose-derived feed, because it is the sugar microorganisms metabolise most readily. Its second role rests on the free aldehyde group at the end of the open-chain form, which makes glucose a reducing sugar. That aldehyde donates electrons to metal ions, reducing them to the metal, and it is the reducing agent in the Tollens-type silvering used to deposit mirror coatings and in some electroless plating baths, where metal must be deposited on a non-conductive substrate without an applied current. The same reducing chemistry is used in textile vat dyeing, where indigo and similar dyes must be reduced to their soluble leuco form before they will take up on the fibre. It is used in fermentation feedstocks, mirror silvering and electroless plating, textile vat dyeing, pharmaceutical manufacture and as a chemical intermediate. Bio Green Chem supplies glucose to specification on dextrose equivalent, assay, moisture, ash, pH, colour and heavy metals.
