      How does calcium acetate gel alcohol into solid fuel?

      A saturated aqueous solution added to ethanol forms a stiff self-supporting gel almost instantly. The salt is soluble in water but not in alcohol, so introducing it into the alcohol causes it to precipitate as a fine network that traps the liquid. That gel is the fuel in chafing dish and camping burners, and it burns as the alcohol evaporates from it.

      Why use calcium acetate rather than calcium chloride to accelerate concrete?

      Because it introduces no chloride. Calcium chloride is the classic and cheapest set accelerator but chloride corrodes embedded reinforcement, so it cannot be used in reinforced or prestressed concrete. Calcium acetate gives acceleration without that risk, which is why it is specified where steel is present.

      Why is calcium acetate so hygroscopic?

      It readily absorbs atmospheric moisture and will cake or liquefy if left exposed, losing assay as it does so. Packaging must be resealed immediately after part use and the material stored in a dry area. This is a routine handling requirement rather than a defect, but it is more pronounced than with many acetate salts.

      What is calcium acetate used for in effluent treatment?

      Precipitating phosphate and fluoride as insoluble calcium salts. Both are regulated discharge parameters, and dosing a soluble calcium source converts them to solids that settle out with the sludge. It is chosen over cheaper calcium sources where solubility and the absence of chloride or sulphate matter to the process.
