      1

Why is xanthan used in drilling fluids?

Because its shear-thinning behaviour is exactly what a drilling mud needs. The mud must be thin enough to pump down the string at high rate, yet thick enough in the annulus to carry rock cuttings to surface and hold them suspended when circulation stops. Xanthan's viscosity collapses under shear and recovers instantly when shear stops, which delivers both.
      2

What makes xanthan more robust than other thickeners?

Its tolerance of conditions that destroy most biopolymers. It holds viscosity across pH 2 to 12, in high salt and calcium brines, and through repeated freeze-thaw and pasteurisation. Starch, guar and most cellulose derivatives fail on at least one of those, which is why xanthan is specified where the environment is hostile.
      3

How should xanthan powder be dispersed?

Into a vortex of vigorously agitated liquid, or pre-blended with another dry ingredient before wetting. Added as a mass to still liquid it forms lumps with a hydrated gel skin that water cannot penetrate, and those lumps do not recover. High-shear mixing or a powder induction system is the reliable route at scale.
      4

What is xanthan and guar synergy?

A combination that gives higher viscosity together than either gum alone at the same total concentration. Xanthan interacts with the galactomannan structure of guar and locust bean gum to build a stronger network, and with locust bean gum specifically it forms a true gel rather than just a thickened solution. Formulators use the effect to reduce total gum cost.
