Isobornyl acetate, C12H20O2 with CAS number 125-12-2, is a colourless liquid or low-melting solid with a characteristic fresh, woody, camphoraceous pine odour. It is produced from alpha-pinene, itself obtained from turpentine, via camphene and acetylation. It occupies a specific niche in functional perfumery. Natural pine needle oils give an attractive fresh coniferous note but vary with harvest, cost more, contain sensitising terpenes and oxidise on storage, which produces both odour drift and increased allergenicity. Isobornyl acetate delivers a comparable pine and camphor character as a single, well-defined compound with consistent quality and considerably better stability, and it holds up in the aggressive chemical environments of household products. That is why it appears so widely in pine-scented cleaners, disinfectants, air fresheners and detergents rather than in fine fragrance, where more complex naturals are affordable.
