Why is alkali stability important for a cleaning fragrance?
Because many household and industrial cleaners are alkaline, and esters can hydrolyse in alkali, losing their odour and generating acid that changes the formulation. Isobornyl acetate is unusually stable in alkaline conditions for an ester, which is why it survives in bleach-adjacent and caustic cleaning products where many fragrance esters do not.

Where does isobornyl acetate come from?
From alpha-pinene, obtained from turpentine, which is itself a by-product of the pulp and paper industry and of pine tapping. The pinene is converted to camphene and then acetylated. That makes the material renewable in origin, derived from a forestry by-product rather than from petrochemical feedstock.

Is it used in fine fragrance?
Rarely. Its role is in functional perfumery, where the requirement is a recognisable, robust, inexpensive pine character that survives an aggressive chemical environment. Fine fragrance can afford more complex naturals and blends, so isobornyl acetate is found mainly in cleaners, disinfectants, air fresheners and detergents.
