Monobutyltin Oxide (MBTO)

About This Product
Monobutyltin oxide, CAS 2273-43-0, is a white powder supplied in 25 kg paper drums. Where dibutyltin oxide leans toward stabiliser intermediates, the monobutyl compound is used predominantly as a polyesterification catalyst. Polyester resins are built by condensing diacids with diols, a reaction that is slow and equilibrium-limited without catalysis. A tin catalyst raises the rate and lets the reaction be driven to the high molecular weight and low acid value that coating resins require. That places MBTO in the production of saturated polyester resins for powder coatings and coil steel coatings, in insulating paints, and in unsaturated polyester resin production. It is additionally used as a raw material for plastic stabilisers, as an organotin intermediate, as an esterification reaction catalyst and as an electrophoresis electrodeposition coating catalyst.
