What does aprotic mean and why does it matter here?
Aprotic means the molecule has no acidic hydrogen to donate. Glycol ethers with a free hydroxyl carry such a hydrogen, and it reacts destructively with organolithium and Grignard reagents and with isocyanates. Capping both ends of the glycol with methyl groups removes every hydroxyl, so EDM can be used as a reaction medium with those reagents where a mono-ether cannot.

Why is EDM used in lithium battery electrolytes?
Its two ether oxygens sit at the right spacing to chelate a lithium cation, holding it in solution and supporting ion transport through the electrolyte. Combined with low viscosity and the absence of any reactive hydrogen, that makes it a useful electrolyte solvent, though its low boiling point limits the temperature range compared with the longer glymes.

Does EDM form peroxides?
Yes, as all ethers do. Exposure to air and light generates peroxides that concentrate on distillation and can detonate. The material should be supplied inhibited, stored sealed away from light, dated on receipt, and tested for peroxides before any distillation or evaporation to dryness. Containers past their shelf life should be tested rather than assumed safe.

What is EDM also called?
Monoglyme, DME or dimethoxyethane, all referring to the same substance with CAS number 110-71-4. The glyme naming convention counts the ethylene glycol units, so monoglyme has one, diglyme two, triglyme three and tetraglyme four, with each step raising boiling point and cation-chelating strength.
