    Zirconium Dioxide (Zirconia)

    About This Product

Zirconium dioxide, ZrO2, is the white crystalline oxide of zirconium, found in nature as the mineral baddeleyite. This industrial-grade material comes as a white powder in 20 kg drums. No assay, stabiliser content or particle size is published for it, so the specification is confirmed on enquiry. Pure zirconia is monoclinic at room temperature and turns tetragonal and then cubic as it is heated; the volume change on cooling back through these phases cracks the unmodified oxide, so yttria, magnesia, calcia or mixed oxides are added to stabilise the tetragonal or cubic phase. Unstabilised zirconia goes into ceramic pigments, ceramic capacitors, PZT piezoceramics and other zirconium-containing materials. Partially stabilised grades, yttria-stabilised in particular, suit structural ceramics, while fully stabilised cubic zirconia is used in refractories, sensors and gemstones. State which form is needed (unstabilised, partially or fully stabilised), together with the stabiliser type and level, ZrO2 content and particle size, and ask for a full data sheet against those values before ordering. The safety data sheet should accompany the offer.
