    Lanthanum Oxide (La2O3)

    About This Product

Lanthanum(III) oxide (La2O3, CAS 1312-81-8, molecular weight 325.82) is specified at 99.99% minimum La2O3/TREO and 99% minimum TREO, with loss on ignition of 1% maximum. Cerium, praseodymium, neodymium and samarium oxides are each held between 0.001% and 0.005% of TREO, and non-rare-earth impurities such as iron oxide, silica, lime and magnesia to 0.001%. The white powder has a density of 6.51 g/cm3 and melts at 2315 °C. Glassmakers use it for high-refraction optical glass and optical fibre, and it is an ingredient of piezoelectric and thermoelectric ceramics and of alloys. As a catalyst it serves organic chemical production and vehicle exhaust converters. It also goes into phosphors, X-ray intensifying screens, hydrogen-storage materials, electrode materials and laser materials. The oxide is insoluble in water, moderately soluble in strong mineral acids and draws moisture from the air, so keep containers closed between uses. The limits above describe one purity; specifications for other purities, and any particle size, are confirmed on enquiry together with the safety data sheet.
