A pellet compound of polylactic acid and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) for blown mulch film at an ultra-thin gauge. The PBAT fraction supplies the extensibility and tear resistance a field film needs as it is stretched over the bed and pinned at the edges, and the PLA fraction supplies stiffness. It is soil biodegradable at end of life. A solid mulch film sheds rainfall and overhead irrigation to the row edges. A water-permeable film lets it through to the root zone, which suits growers irrigating from above rather than through buried drip line. The agronomic function is otherwise unchanged, since the film still raises soil temperature, holds moisture in the bed and blocks the light weeds need to establish. End of life proceeds by hydrolysis of the polyester ester linkages in warm, moist soil, cutting the chains into fragments small enough for soil organisms to consume, so gauge governs both the mechanical margin during laying and how long the film lasts in the field. Run at an ultra-thin gauge, it also lowers the mass of material placed on the field per hectare. Both permeability and service life are matched to the crop and the irrigation method.
