The resin is the flame-retardant grade of the starch-filled polyolefin foaming series: the same powder compound of 30 to 70 per cent native starch in a polypropylene and polyethylene matrix, carrying an FR additive package. Because the base is unchanged, a converter can move between grades without reworking the line. Foam is a difficult substrate to make flame retardant, because expanding a polyolefin multiplies its surface area and drops its density, leaving far more material exposed to a heat source per unit mass and far less thermal mass to absorb it. An FR package works either in the condensed phase, forming a char that insulates the polymer beneath and starves the flame of fuel, or in the gas phase, interrupting the radical chain that sustains combustion. Either route loads additive into a melt whose foaming depends on nucleation and melt strength, so the FR level is balanced against cell structure and density rather than simply maximised. The applicable standard and test method depend on the end use and the sheet gauge; the specific classification achievable is confirmed against your target before supply. This grade is bio-based but NOT biodegradable or compostable. The starch content sits in a polypropylene/polyethylene matrix, so it does not meet EN 13432, ASTM D6400 or BPI. It must not be described, labelled or marketed as biodegradable or compostable. It is used in flame-retardant foamed sheet, technical packaging, transport packaging and construction packaging.
