About This Product
Sulfur, elemental S with CAS number 7704-34-9, is supplied as bright yellow prills, granules, lump or molten bulk. Almost all of it is now involuntary production: it is recovered from natural gas sweetening and petroleum refining by the Claus process, because sulphur compounds have to be removed from fuels to meet emissions legislation, not because anyone set out to mine sulphur. The consequence is a supply curve driven by oil and gas throughput rather than by sulphur demand, which makes the price unusually volatile. About 85 percent of it is burned to sulphur dioxide and converted to sulphuric acid, itself the highest-tonnage manufactured chemical in the world, most of which goes into phosphate fertiliser production. The remainder finds a wide range of uses that turn on sulphur's ability to form chains and bridges between atoms. In rubber it is the crosslinking agent of vulcanisation, forming the sulphide bridges that turn a soft plastic mass into an elastic solid. In agriculture it serves both as a secondary nutrient and, as micronised wettable sulphur, as one of the oldest fungicides and acaricides still in use. It is also used in bitumen modification and in mining leach chemistry. It is used in sulphuric acid manufacture, rubber vulcanisation, fertilisers and soil amendment, agricultural fungicides, mining chemicals and bitumen modification. Bio Green Chem supplies sulfur to specification on purity, ash, acidity, moisture, carbon, arsenic and particle size.
