When the chelation is wanted but the acidity is not. Free citric acid dissolves scale aggressively but attacks soft metals, etches concrete and cannot be used on alkaline-sensitive substrates. The sodium salt binds calcium, magnesium, iron and copper just as effectively while leaving pH near neutral or slightly alkaline.

Why is sodium citrate used in electroplating?
It holds metal ions in solution as citrate complexes rather than letting them precipitate. That controls the rate at which metal is deposited and improves throwing power, meaning the bath plates more evenly into recesses and onto complex shapes. It is used particularly in alkaline and non-cyanide plating systems where free metal ions would otherwise precipitate as hydroxides.

How does sodium citrate act as an anticoagulant?
By binding calcium. The blood clotting cascade requires calcium ions at several steps, and citrate chelates them out of availability, which stops clotting. That is the same calcium-binding chemistry used industrially to sequester hardness, applied in a different context, and it is why citrate tubes are standard in blood collection.

Which sodium citrate is supplied?
Trisodium citrate is the usual commercial product, with all three carboxyl groups neutralised, giving a mildly alkaline solution. Monosodium and disodium citrate also exist and give progressively more acidic solutions. The form should be specified, since the pH of the resulting solution differs substantially between them.
