      How does a sodium acetate heat pack work?

      The trihydrate is heated until it dissolves in its own water of crystallisation, then cooled undisturbed. It stays liquid well below its normal freezing point because there is no nucleation site for crystals to start from, a state called supersaturation. Flexing a metal disc in the pack provides that site, crystallisation propagates through the mass in seconds, and the latent heat of fusion is released as sudden warmth.

      Can a sodium acetate heat pack be reused?

      Yes, indefinitely in principle. Boiling the pack redissolves the crystals and returns it to the supersaturated state on cooling, and the cycle can be repeated. The chemistry is not consumed; only physical damage to the pack or loss of seal ends its life. That reusability is the whole basis of the product.

      Why is sodium acetate used in textile dyeing?

      As a buffer. Dye uptake and final shade are sensitive to pH, and a dyebath drifts as the reaction proceeds and as fibre and auxiliaries release acid or alkali. Sodium acetate paired with acetic acid holds the bath at the chosen pH through the run, so shade is reproducible between batches.

      What is the difference between sodium acetate and sodium diacetate?

      Sodium diacetate is a molecular complex of sodium acetate and acetic acid, so it carries free acid as well as the salt and delivers a sharper acid note and lower pH. In flavour applications that gives a more pronounced vinegar character; in preservation it gives more of the undissociated acid that carries antimicrobial activity.
