The flowers of Osmanthus fragrans are very small, the harvest window in autumn is short, picking is manual, and the quantity of aromatic material recovered per tonne of flowers is among the lowest in natural perfumery. Osmanthus absolute is consequently one of the costliest materials in the perfumer's palette, and that cost carries through to the extract and the floral wax derived from the same stream.

It is usually described as ripe apricot and stone fruit with tea and soft leather notes underneath, a profile quite unlike the white florals it is often grouped with. The fruity character comes largely from ionone-type compounds. In a botanical extract that character is present but dilute and subtle, emerging on warming rather than projecting the way an absolute would.

Both, and in a formulation it is generally chosen for the combination. It carries flavonoids and phenolic compounds associated with antioxidant activity, which supports skin-care positioning, alongside a genuine botanical scent signature that a synthetic fragrance cannot claim. If a strong osmanthus scent is the sole objective, an absolute or a fragrance accord will be more cost-effective.

Into the water phase during cool-down, typically at 0.1 to 5 percent. Adding it during the hot phase degrades the volatile constituents that give it its character and can darken the material. Compatibility of the carrier with the base and the preservative system should be confirmed, and supply should be planned around the autumn harvest, which limits availability.
