About This Product

Dibutyl phthalate, DBP with CAS number 84-74-2, is a clear oily liquid of lower molecular weight and higher volatility than the octyl phthalates, and correspondingly stronger solvating power for PVC and for nitrocellulose. That strong solvation was its technical advantage. A low molecular weight plasticiser penetrates and gels the polymer faster and at lower temperature, which made DBP valuable in plastisols, in nitrocellulose lacquers and adhesives, and as a fast-fusing component blended with a slower primary plasticiser. Its low molecular weight is also its liability. Small plasticiser molecules migrate out of the polymer over time and evaporate from the surface, so articles stiffen, shrink and produce the fogging film familiar on vehicle glass, and the released plasticiser enters the environment. Combined with its classification as toxic for reproduction category 1B and its inclusion in REACH Annex XIV, that has removed it from consumer applications; it is restricted in toys, childcare articles, cosmetics and food contact. Supply depends on the end use being authorised in the destination market. Where permitted it is used in industrial adhesives and sealants, nitrocellulose lacquers, printing inks and as a processing aid.
