Butyl tin mercaptide is the butyl homologue of the methyltin mercaptide stabilisers, supplied as a transparent liquid. It performs the same dual function, substituting labile chlorine on the polymer chain and scavenging hydrogen chloride from the melt, but with butyl rather than methyl groups on the tin. The practical difference between the two families is regulatory and economic rather than mechanistic. Butyltin stabilisers were the original organotin heat stabilisers and remain widely used outside food-contact and potable-water applications, where butyltin classification has pushed formulators toward methyltin. Where those restrictions do not bite, butyltin grades remain a cost-effective route to the clarity organotin chemistry provides. Declared applications are PVC granules and compounds, pipe and fittings, high-transparency PVC sheet and film, and PVC pipe and profiles. Packed 1000 kg IBC tote (20,000 kg per 20-foot container) or 200 kg drum (16,000 kg per container).
