What is the drawback of a low molecular weight plasticiser?
Permanence. Small plasticiser molecules migrate out of the polymer over time and evaporate from the surface, so articles stiffen, shrink and produce the fogging film familiar on vehicle glass, and the released material enters the environment. The efficiency that makes them attractive in processing is the same property that makes them impermanent.

What is DBP's regulatory status?
It is classified in the EU as toxic for reproduction category 1B and is included in REACH Annex XIV, so its use requires authorisation. It is separately restricted in toys, childcare articles, cosmetics and food contact materials. Supply depends on the end use being authorised in the destination market.

Where is DBP still used?
In permitted industrial applications, including some adhesives and sealants, nitrocellulose lacquers, printing inks and as a processing aid, where its strong solvating power has no straightforward substitute and exposure is controlled. Permitted-use status must be established before supply rather than assumed from the application type.
