Castor Oil

Castor oil is the liquid triglyceride oil obtained from Ricinus communis seeds. Its characteristic ricinoleic-acid residues carry hydroxyl groups in addition to an unsaturated carbon chain, giving the oil a chemical profile different from conventional oleic- or linoleic-rich vegetable oils. The hydroxyl functionality is also relevant when castor oil is selected as a reactive feedstock for specialty derivatives. In personal-care formulations, castor oil supplies a viscous emollient phase for skin, hair and lip products. Its contribution to spreading, gloss and consistency should be assessed alongside the other oils and waxes in the formula. The oil itself is distinct from both solid hydrogenated castor oil and water-compatible castor-oil ethoxylates. Choose the processing grade around the intended use, with agreed colour, odour and analytical limits. Identity, hydroxyl value, acidity, moisture and oxidation measurements can form part of the purchasing specification; the required limits and ingredient declaration must follow the nominated source and application.
