      Why are benzoate plasticisers of interest?

      Because they are non-phthalate and have unusually high solvating power. Esterifying benzoic acid with glycols gives plasticisers that gel PVC rapidly at lower temperature, which speeds processing, and that are compatible with a wide range of polymers. With ortho-phthalates under regulatory pressure, benzoates have taken a share of vinyl flooring, adhesive and sealant formulation.

      What does benzoic acid do in an alkyd resin?

      It acts as a chain stopper. Being monofunctional, it caps a growing polyester chain and prevents further extension at that point, which controls molecular weight and stops the resin gelling in the reactor. It also improves gloss, hardness and drying speed in the finished coating, so it is used deliberately rather than only as a process control.

      Is benzoic acid a route to phenol?

      Yes. Oxidative decarboxylation of benzoic acid to phenol is one of the commercial phenol routes, alongside the dominant cumene process. It is also an intermediate in one route to caprolactam, the monomer for nylon 6. Those two conversions account for a substantial part of industrial benzoic acid consumption.

      How is industrial grade different from food grade?

      Mainly in the control of chlorinated compounds, sulfated ash, colour and heavy metals, which food and pharmacopoeial grades specify tightly. Industrial grade for chemical conversion has looser limits since the material is reacted further. The grade must be stated at enquiry, as the two are not interchangeable in either direction.
