About This Product
Allantoin, C4H6N4O3, is a diureide of glyoxylic acid registered under CAS 97-59-6. Its white crystals assay at 99.0–101.0% and melt at no lower than 225 °C, and a 0.5% solution in water gives pH 4.5–6.0. Chloride is held to 0.05% max, loss on drying and residue on ignition to 0.1% max each, heavy metals to 10 ppm max, and optical rotation lies between −0.10° and +0.10°. It dissolves in hot water, hot ethanol and dilute sodium hydroxide solution. In cosmetics it works as a skin-conditioning ingredient and goes into moisturising creams and lotions, shaving preparations, shampoos and hair conditioners, soaps, toothpastes, and antiperspirant or deodorant lotions. It is not offered as a plant growth regulator: in the UK and EU that use makes it a plant-protection product, which must be authorised before sale. The specification cites no pharmacopoeia, so pharmaceutical buyers should establish which monograph they need and whether the lot meets it. Ask for the batch certificate with every delivery and check the powder in the finished product.
