Ginseng extract is prepared from Panax ginseng and carries CAS number 90045-38-8. It is standardised on total ginsenosides, the dammarane-type triterpene saponins such as Rb1 and Rg1 that are regarded as the plant's principal actives, and is offered in grades from 10 to 80 percent. Ginseng has a long history in East Asian skin care, where it is positioned for revitalising, anti-fatigue and anti-ageing claims and in scalp tonics. For a formulator the grade is the first decision. Lower-percentage extracts carry more of the plant's other constituents and cost less per kilogram, while high-percentage grades deliver concentrated saponins at a low dose, useful in clear serums and where the colour and odour of a crude extract would be a problem. Ginsenosides are surface-active, and high doses can contribute foam and bitterness, so the dose is usually set by the claim rather than maximised. Because the plant part and the assay method, colorimetric total saponins or HPLC summation of named ginsenosides, both vary between grades, they should be confirmed with the certificate of analysis, and they also determine the INCI name. It is used in anti-ageing creams and serums, eye creams, toners and essences, cleansers, shampoos and scalp tonics, and in revitalising personal care products.
