Licorice root extract is prepared from the roots and rhizomes of Glycyrrhiza species and carries CAS number 68916-91-6. This grade is a powdered extract standardised to 7 percent glycyrrhizic acid, the triterpene saponin that gives licorice its intense sweetness and much of its biological activity. Glycyrrhizic acid and its salts are among the most established soothing agents in cosmetics, used to calm redness and irritation and to support the skin's tolerance of more active ingredients. A water-extracted, glycyrrhizin-standardised powder such as this dissolves readily into aqueous phases, which makes it convenient in toners, gels and emulsions. It should be distinguished from the solvent-extracted, glabridin-rich licorice extracts that underpin most skin-brightening claims: those come from a different extraction and a different marker compound. The botanical species and plant part should be confirmed from the certificate of analysis, because they determine the INCI name used on the finished label. It is used in soothing and after-sun products, toners and serums, sensitive-skin moisturisers, oral care and shampoos, and as a skin-conditioning botanical in personal care formulations.
