Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

About This Product
Caprylic/capric triglyceride is manufactured rather than extracted. Coconut or palm kernel oil is split into its constituent fatty acids, the caprylic (C8) and capric (C10) fractions are distilled off, and those two chains are then re-esterified with glycerol. It carries CAS number 65381-09-1 and the INCI name Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, and is supplied as a clear, colourless, odourless liquid. Building a triglyceride from only two short saturated chains is what gives it properties no natural oil has. Natural oils are mixtures of chain lengths including unsaturated ones, and those double bonds are what oxidise, so they darken, thicken and develop rancid odour. This ester contains no unsaturation at all, so its shelf life is measured in years and it needs no antioxidant. The short chains also make it far less viscous than a conventional vegetable oil, so it spreads quickly, absorbs without residue and leaves a dry rather than greasy finish. It is an excellent solvent for oil-soluble actives, vitamins, sunscreen filters and pigments, and is often the carrier that gets them into a formulation. Typical use is 2 to 50 percent by format. It is used in creams, lotions, sun care and colour cosmetics, as a carrier for actives and fragrance, in cleansing oils, hair care, baby products and pharmaceutical topicals. Bio Green Chem supplies caprylic/capric triglyceride to specification on C8 to C10 ratio, acid value, saponification value, peroxide value, moisture and colour.
