    Magnesium Fluoride (MgF2)

    About This Product

Magnesium fluoride (MgF2, CAS 7783-40-6) transmits light from the ultraviolet to the infrared and has a low, stable refractive index. It comes as a 99% powder with nanometre particle sizes of 20 nm or 50-100 nm, and in four conventional grades of 99.5%, 98.0%, 97.5% and 95.0% minimum content, whose limits on chloride, sulphate, iron, moisture and other impurities differ from grade to grade. In optical coating it forms the anti-reflective film on camera lenses, telescopes and laser windows, and it is made into infrared windows, lenses and prisms. Ceramics makers use it as an insulating filler in electronic ceramics and as a flux that lowers sintering temperature; it is also a flux in aluminium electrolysis and magnesium smelting and an ingredient of welding agents. The 20 nm and 50-100 nm powders are nanoforms, and under UK and EU REACH a registration must cover the nanoform where registration applies. The conventional grade table gives no particle size, so confirm which grade each size is made to. The fine powder adsorbs gases, so keep it sealed, cool and dry, and protect it from damp and heavy loads.
