      1

Where is sugarcane wax obtained from?

From filter press mud, the residue separated when cane juice is clarified during sugar manufacture. The cane plant coats its stalk in a protective wax, and that wax concentrates in the mud, from which it is solvent-extracted and refined. It is genuinely a by-product of sugar production rather than material from a dedicated crop.
      2

      Can sugarcane wax replace carnauba?

Partially, in many applications. Its composition is closer to carnauba than to the oilseed waxes, being dominated by long-chain aliphatic esters, and it melts at 76 to 82 degrees Celsius with good hardness and gloss. It is generally softer in feel than carnauba because of its higher unsaponifiable content, so a trial is needed where hardness is critical, but it offers a lower-cost alternative with a broader supply base.
      3

What does the higher unsaponifiable content contribute?

It contributes policosanols, free fatty acids and sterols, which soften the skin feel relative to carnauba. In practice that means a sugarcane wax system feels more cushioned and less draggy at the same hardness, which formulators use deliberately to take the harshness out of a hard wax blend without dropping the melting point.
      4

What melting point and hardness should be expected?

Melting point runs 76 to 82 degrees Celsius, placing it between rice bran wax and carnauba. Hardness is high but slightly below carnauba. As with any natural wax, the exact figures vary with source and refining, so melting point, acid and saponification value and penetration hardness should be confirmed on the certificate of analysis for the specific lot.
