About This Product
Soft water salt is refined sodium chloride, CAS 7647-14-5, produced by vacuum evaporation or solar harvesting and compressed into tablets or supplied as granules, blocks or crystals for water softener brine tanks. Its role is regularly misunderstood. The salt does not remove hardness from the water supply. Softening is done by a bed of ion exchange resin carrying sodium ions, which swaps them for the calcium and magnesium ions in the incoming water; hardness is retained on the resin and sodium goes out in the softened water. Once the resin is loaded with calcium and magnesium it stops working, and the function of the salt is to regenerate it. A concentrated brine flushed through the bed reverses the exchange by sheer concentration, stripping the hardness ions off the resin and sending them to drain while restoring the sodium. Purity is the specification that matters: insoluble matter and anticaking additives foul the resin bed and block the injector, which is why rock salt and de-icing salt must not be substituted. It is used in domestic and commercial water softeners, ion exchange regeneration, dishwashers and in industrial process water conditioning. Bio Green Chem supplies soft water salt to specification on sodium chloride assay, insoluble matter, moisture, calcium and magnesium, and tablet hardness.
