Phosphorus remover is supplied as a liquid metal salt coagulant, generally an iron or aluminium based formulation, dosed into a wastewater stream to precipitate dissolved phosphorus as an insoluble metal phosphate that settles out with the sludge. The reason chemical dosing is needed at all is that biological treatment removes phosphorus only incidentally. Conventional activated sludge takes up phosphorus for cell growth, which accounts for a modest fraction of the load; enhanced biological phosphorus removal can do considerably better but is sensitive to influent composition and to operating upsets. Discharge consents in nutrient-sensitive catchments are commonly set at 1 mg/l total phosphorus or lower, and increasingly at 0.5 or 0.1, and those figures are below what biology alone reliably delivers. Dosing a trivalent metal salt precipitates orthophosphate directly and is the standard means of closing that gap. Dose point matters: adding upstream of primary settlement removes load early, while adding at the final stage gives the tightest effluent control, and many works dose at both. It is used in municipal wastewater treatment, industrial effluent, nutrient-sensitive catchments and in package and small works treatment.
