      Why is silk powder insoluble when the other silk ingredients dissolve?

      Because it is not hydrolysed. Silk powder is intact fibroin, micronised into a fine powder but with its protein chains left whole and in their ordered crystalline structure, which is what makes silk fibre insoluble in the first place. The hydrolysed grades have had those chains broken down, which is what makes them dissolve.

      What is the soft-focus effect?

      Optical blurring of fine lines and pores. Silk powder particles are small, roughly spherical and translucent, so they scatter incident light diffusely rather than reflecting it directly. That diffusion softens the appearance of surface irregularities without any pigment or optical brightener, which is why it is used in primers and finishing powders.

      Why does silk powder feel so slippery?

      Because the fine particles roll against one another under pressure rather than dragging, which formulators describe as a silky or cushioned slip. That property also improves the application and blending of pressed powders and foundations, and the particles absorb sebum and moisture, which extends wear in colour cosmetics.

      Is sericin removed from silk powder?

      Yes, by degumming before micronisation, and residual sericin is a specification point. Sericin is the water-soluble gum protein coating the fibroin filaments, and leaving it in would compromise the powder's insolubility and its handling. The sericin removed at that stage is itself recovered and sold as a separate ingredient.
