Paper Lamination Resin is a PBAT-based pellet compound for the extrusion lamination and coating of paper and board. PBAT is an aliphatic-aromatic copolyester: the aromatic units give the film its toughness, while the aliphatic ester links give the chain bonds that hydrolysis and compost organisms can cleave. It is soft, low in modulus and high in elongation, which is what suits it to a coating rather than to a load-bearing part. This is the dedicated lamination resin for paper-plastic composites, where the polymer's job is adhesion to the substrate and barrier, not structural strength. At the nip the melt curtain is drawn to a thin coat and has to wet the fibre surface and key into it while the heat is still in it, so adhesion is as much mechanical anchorage into an open, porous surface as it is chemical. Barrier is a question of continuity as much as thickness, since grease and moisture resistance come from an unbroken layer. Because the coating is compostable, the coated board can be composted whole rather than sitting between the paper and plastic streams as PE-coated stock does. Supplied as a raw material for processing on the buyer's own line. We do not produce finished articles. It is used in paper cup coating, in board lamination, and in food wrap and liners.
