Food Contact Flat Bag Compound (PLA/PBAT, FDA)

About This Product

The compound is a film-grade pellet blend of polylactic acid and polybutylene adipate terephthalate, FDA compliant for food contact on the grades supplied against that specification. PLA contributes stiffness and clarity, PBAT the toughness and elongation a bag needs to survive filling and handling, and the ratio is set against the gauge and the bag format. A flat bag for food needs both the mechanical behaviour to run on a blown film line and the documentation to stand up to a food-safety audit. The mechanical half is bubble stability: above the die the melt is drawn in two directions at once and holds that shape only if it stiffens as it thins, so any point running thin arrests itself rather than continuing to draw. Neat PLA is a linear polyester with low melt strength and little strain hardening, so the bubble wanders and gauge drifts across the web. The PBAT fraction raises melt viscosity and extensibility and stabilises the bubble between die and frost line, costing some of the stiffness and clarity PLA contributes, which is the balance the ratio sets. Compliance then constrains that balance, because every component of the formulation, not only the base polymers, has to sit inside the food-contact scope. It is used in food packaging bags, produce bags, flat bag conversion and blown film production.
