The compound is a high-toughness film-grade pellet blend of polylactic acid and polybutylene adipate terephthalate for blown film at very thin gauge. PLA supplies the modulus and PBAT the elongation, and the grade is weighted towards the second because the failure mode here is tearing rather than sagging. Pet waste bags are used at a very thin gauge and are judged entirely on whether they tear. At that thickness there is almost no section to absorb energy, so toughness has to come from the capacity of the polymer to deform rather than from the amount of material present: what matters is the area under the stress-strain curve, not the peak of it. The bag is loaded in an unpredictable direction, inverted over a hand and closed around an irregular solid, so puncture resistance and resistance to a tear propagating from a fold matter more than tensile strength down the machine direction. A PLA-rich film is glassy and fractures at the fold; the dispersed PBAT phase draws under load and blunts an advancing crack, and the ratio and dispersion of that phase are what the grade is built around. The bags are frequently disposed of into organic waste streams, which is where a biodegradable film earns its place rather than simply being a marketing claim. It is used in pet waste bags, sanitary disposal bags and thin gauge film conversion.
