EE - Ethylene Glycol Monoethyl Ether(EGME)

Ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, known as EE, EGEE or cellosolve, has the formula C4H10O2 and CAS number 110-80-5. It is a clear colourless liquid, miscible with water and with a wide range of organic solvents, with a slightly higher boiling point and slower evaporation than the methyl homologue. Structurally it differs from EM only in carrying an ethyl rather than a methyl group on the ether oxygen. That extra carbon makes it marginally less water-loving and gives slightly stronger solvency for resins, but it does not change the toxicological picture. Like EM, it is classified in the EU as toxic for reproduction category 1B with hazard statements H360FD, and it is absorbed readily through skin. Both are metabolised to alkoxyacetic acids, which are the metabolites responsible for the reproductive and haematological effects, and this shared metabolic route is why the short-chain ethylene glycol ethers are restricted as a class rather than individually. Industrial users have largely migrated to propylene glycol ethers, whose principal metabolic route does not produce an equivalent acid. Where permitted, it is used in industrial coatings, printing inks, cleaning formulations, aviation de-icing and as a chemical intermediate.
