      How does phosphate dosing protect a boiler from scale?

      By changing what the calcium precipitates as. Untreated, calcium in feedwater deposits as calcium carbonate or sulphate scale, which is hard, adherent and insulating, and it bakes onto the heat transfer surfaces. Dosing phosphate precipitates the calcium instead as hydroxyapatite, a soft sludge that stays mobile in the water and can be removed by blowdown.

      Why is DSP used as a buffer in industrial processes?

      Because paired with the acidic monosodium salt it forms a phosphate buffer whose pH can be set anywhere across a broad band by adjusting the ratio between them. Electroplating baths, textile dye baths and fermentation media all drift in pH as the process runs, and a buffer holds them steady without repeated manual correction.

      What is DSP's role as a detergent builder?

      It sequesters calcium and magnesium hardness ions so they cannot react with the surfactant. Without a builder, hardness consumes surfactant by forming insoluble scum, wasting active ingredient and leaving deposits. The phosphate ties up the hardness so the surfactant is free to do its job, and its alkalinity assists soil removal at the same time.

      Is DSP available anhydrous and hydrated?

      Yes, and the hydration state matters. Anhydrous DSP is more concentrated per unit weight; the dihydrate, heptahydrate and dodecahydrate carry progressively more water of crystallisation and correspondingly less active phosphate. The form should be specified rather than assumed, since dosing calculations depend on it.
