Chopstick Injection Compound (FDA)

A polylactic acid based compound supplied as a pellet for injection moulding, formulated toward the stiff end of the range with a melt that will fill a long flow path without the very low viscosity that would cost modulus in the finished part. It is biodegradable at end of life. A moulded chopstick is a long, slender part that must not flex in use or show sink marks along its length. Both faults come from the geometry. Deflection under a side load rises with the cube of the free length and falls with the modulus and the second moment of area, and since the diameter is fixed by how the part has to sit in the hand, the only lever left is the stiffness of the material itself. Sink is the other consequence of length, as the melt shrinks while it cools and, unless holding pressure still reaches the far end of a cavity that is already freezing, the surface is drawn inward where the section is thickest, which on a polished unbroken length is immediately visible. This grade is formulated for rigidity and surface finish in that geometry. Supplied FDA compliant for food contact, as a biodegradable alternative to both moulded polystyrene and single-use timber. Supplied as a raw material for processing on the buyer's own line. We do not produce finished articles. It is used in moulded chopsticks, in foodservice and takeaway and in Asian catering supplies.
