Bromocyclopropane, also called cyclopropyl bromide, has the formula C3H5Br, molecular weight 121.0 and CAS number 4333-56-6. It is a colourless, transparent liquid boiling at about 69 °C and insoluble in water. The cyclopropyl group is one of the most widely used small rings in medicinal and agrochemical design, because it adds rigidity and resistance to metabolic oxidation while taking up little space. Bromocyclopropane is the practical way to introduce it. It forms cyclopropylmagnesium bromide and cyclopropyllithium, which add the ring to carbonyl compounds or transfer it to boron to give cyclopropylboronic acid and its esters for palladium-catalysed Suzuki coupling. Both organometallic steps are destroyed by water, so moisture, limited here to 0.5 percent, is the specification point that most affects yield, with purity of 98 percent minimum and the largest single impurity at 0.5 percent. It is used as an intermediate in pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis, in preparing cyclopropylboronic acid and cyclopropyl organometallic reagents, and in organic synthesis generally.
