2-Methyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)aniline, also named 3-amino-2-methylbenzotrifluoride, has the formula C8H8F3N, molecular weight 175.2 and CAS number 54396-44-0. It is an aromatic amine carrying a methyl group and a trifluoromethyl group on adjacent ring positions. Its best-known use is as the amine component of flunixin, the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug widely used in cattle, horses and pigs. Coupling the aniline with 2-chloronicotinic acid forms the diarylamine bond of the drug, and the finished molecule keeps the methyl and trifluoromethyl substitution pattern exactly as supplied, so isomeric anilines are the impurities that matter most: a methyl or trifluoromethyl group in the wrong position would give a different, unwanted diarylamine. More generally, the trifluoromethyl group raises lipophilicity and metabolic stability, which makes this aniline a useful building block wherever those properties are wanted in pharmaceutical or crop-protection molecules.
