Zinc sulfate is traded as the monohydrate, CAS 7446-19-7, and the heptahydrate, CAS 7446-20-0, with CAS number 7733-02-0 covering the anhydrous salt. It is supplied as white to off-white crystals or granules, freely soluble in water. Zinc deficiency is the most widespread micronutrient disorder in world agriculture, and the reasons are chemical rather than geological. Zinc becomes progressively less available as pH rises, so calcareous and over-limed soils lock it up even when total zinc is adequate. High available phosphorus compounds the problem by inducing zinc deficiency within the plant, which is why heavily phosphate-fertilised soils often show it. Symptoms appear on young leaves as interveinal chlorosis with shortened internodes, giving the rosetting or little-leaf habit. Because zinc is also a limiting nutrient in human diets dependent on cereals, zinc fertilisation is used as a biofortification strategy as well as a yield measure. The monohydrate carries around 35 percent zinc against roughly 22 percent for the heptahydrate, so hydration state should be specified. It is used in micronutrient fertilisers and seed treatment, animal feed premixes, rayon manufacture, electroplating and as a mineral flotation depressant.
