Manganese sulfate is usually supplied as the monohydrate, MnSO4.H2O with CAS number 10034-96-5, or as the anhydrous salt with CAS number 7785-87-7, in pale pink crystals or powder, freely soluble in water. Its agronomic role is specific and easily confused with others. Manganese is a cofactor in the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II, the site at which plants split water to release oxygen, so a deficient plant cannot photosynthesise efficiently regardless of how much chlorophyll it has. The visible symptom is interveinal chlorosis, which also occurs with magnesium and iron deficiency, and distinguishing them matters because the corrections are different. Manganese and iron are immobile in the plant, so their deficiency symptoms appear on the youngest leaves; magnesium is mobile and is withdrawn from older tissue, so its symptoms appear on the oldest leaves first. Manganese availability falls sharply as soil pH rises above about 6.5, so deficiency is common on limed and calcareous ground. It is also used in feed premixes, in dry cell batteries and as a catalyst. It is used in micronutrient fertilisers and foliar sprays, animal feed premixes, batteries, ceramics and as a catalyst.
