Triethylene glycol monomethyl ether, TM or MTG, has the formula C7H16O4 and CAS number 112-35-6. It is a clear, colourless, nearly odourless liquid of high viscosity relative to the shorter ethers, fully miscible with water, and boils above 240 degrees Celsius. Extending the backbone to three ethylene glycol units pushes the molecule firmly into the low-volatility, strongly hydrophilic end of the range. Three ether oxygens and a hydroxyl give it a high affinity for water, so it is markedly hygroscopic and is used where a liquid must hold moisture rather than release it: as a humectant, as a component in dehydration systems and as a plasticiser that will not migrate out and evaporate. Its very low vapour pressure means it contributes almost nothing to VOC and produces essentially no solvent odour, which matters in enclosed and consumer applications. It also serves as a chemical intermediate, since the single free hydroxyl can be esterified or etherified while the backbone provides water solubility to the product. It is used in gas dehydration, hydraulic and brake fluids, printing inks, plasticisers, cosmetics and as a chemical intermediate.
